Chromium symbol Cr, silver-white metal, belongs to group VIB in the periodic table. Chromium has an atomic number of 24 and an atomic weight of 51.9961. It is a body-centered cubic crystal. The common valences are +3, +6 and +2. The oxidation number is 10. In 1797, French chemist L.N.Vauquelin discovered a new element in Siberian red lead ore (chrome-lead ore) and reduced it with carbon the following year to obtain metallic chromium. Because chromium can generate beautiful multi-colored compounds, it is named chromium according to the Greek word chroma (color).
 
The main purpose
 
Chromium is an inactive metal, stable to oxygen and moisture at room temperature, but reacts with fluorine to produce CrF3. When the temperature is higher than 600℃, chromium reacts with water, nitrogen, carbon and sulfur to form corresponding Cr2O3, Cr2N and CrN, Cr7C3 and Cr3C2, Cr2S3. Chromium reacts quickly with oxygen, and when an oxide film is formed on the surface, the speed slows down sharply; when heated to 1200°C, the oxide film is destroyed and the oxidation speed accelerates again. At 2000°C, chromium burns in oxygen to generate Cr2O3. Chromium easily reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid or dilute sulfuric acid to generate chloride or sulfate, and at the same time release hydrogen.

 
Because of the brittleness of chromium alloy, its use as a metal material is still under study. Chromium is mainly used in the form of ferroalloy (such as ferrochrome) to produce stainless steel and various alloy steels. Chromium is used as an additive for aluminum alloys, cobalt alloys, titanium alloys, high temperature alloys, resistance heating alloys, etc. Chromium oxide is used as light-resistant and heat-resistant coatings, as well as abrasives, colorants for glass and ceramics, and catalysts for chemical synthesis. Chrome alum and dichromate are used as leather tanning materials, fabric dyeing mordants, impregnants and various pigments. Chrome plating and chromizing can make steel, copper, aluminum and other metals form a corrosion-resistant surface, which is bright and beautiful, and is widely used in furniture, automobiles, construction and other industries. In addition, chromium ore is also used in large quantities to make refractory materials.
