What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
There are many alloys that are added onto steel to increase the desired properties. The marine-grade stainless steel, commonly referred to as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of harsh environments.
There are many types of stainless steel 316. There are several common types, including L, F, N, and H variations. Each one is distinct, and each serves specific purposes. L means 316L steel has higher carbon content than 316.
316 and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although they're similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are more durable when exposed to high temperatures. Additionally, they aren't able to be made harder through heat treatment, and they can be easily stretched and shaped.
Differentialities between 316L and 316 Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon content than the 316. Even with its reduced carbon level, 316L is very similar with 316 in practically every way. The cost is comparable and both are strong and resistant, making an ideal choice for extreme stress situations.
For projects that require lots welds, 316L can be a superior choice as 316 is more susceptible to welding corrosion more than those using 316L (corrosion within the weld). However, the 316 can be annealed so that it can resist the attenuation of welding. The 316L is a suitable stainless for high temperature, high corrosion processes this is why it is so sought-after in marine and construction projects.
Neither 316 nor 316L is the most economical option. The 304 is comparable to 304L however, the cost is less. Neither is as durable as the 317 or 317L as they have more molybdenum in them and better total corrosion resistance.
