What is Aluminum Nitride

What is Aluminum Nitride?

Known for its high energy conductivity and electrically insulating capabilities, aluminum Nitride makes an ideal material to make semiconductors. In the field of light emitter technology, it is also used as a heat source.

The properties of aluminum nitride

Aluminum nitride (Ani) is an inorganic compound composed of nitrogen and aluminum. It belongs to the wurtzite structure of crystals and has a bandgap value of 6 eV at temperatures of room temperature. This makes it ideal for applications in the domain of deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. It can also be used by circuits in semiconductors.

Aluminum Nitride, a very dense technical ceramic material available in thick and thin forms. It is made using the carbothermal reduction method. This process is however, it can be costly, therefore an alternative process for preparation of powder that is less expensive needs to be researched. The sintering aids are employed to improve the density of the material to specifications.

The use of aluminum nitride

Aluminum nitride can be utilized to make optical material like nanotubes, for example, for chemical sensors. It is also used as a substrate for silicon processing. It is very resistant to corrosion, oxidation and molten metals. It's stable at high temperatures with an inert atmospheric.

Aluminum nitride is found in virtually every metal. It is a white to gray-blue powder. It is soluble in water as well as inorganic acids. However, it is unstable in hydrogen atmospheres. It's also extremely flammable.

It is utilized for mobile phones, to form Radio frequency filters. It is also employed in robotics and medical imaging. These properties are utilized in bulk thin-film acoustic Resonators.

It has been reported that the majority of current research is focused on development of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) based LEDs that work in the ultra-violet, where the wavelength of light is 250 nm. In May 2006, it was discovered that a diode with inefficiency could emit light with about 210 nanometers in wavelength. A single crystal of aluminum nitride has an energy gap of 6.2eV that is determined by vacuum ultraviolet reflectance. Theoretically, the energy gap permits certain waves with lengths of 200 nanometers to travel through. But, when it's implemented commercially, many issues need to be overcome. The aluminum nitride compound is employed in optoelectronics. It is used as inductive layers for optical storage interfaces, electronic substrates. It is also used in chip carriers, electronic components that have excellent thermal conductivity and military applications.

An epitaxial stretching technique for AlN crystals is additionally used in surface acoustic wave detectors due to the characteristics of the AlN piezoelectric effects. The detectors are positioned upon the silicon wafer. Only a handful of places can be able to reliably produce these thin films.

Ceramics made of aluminum nitride exhibit high toughness at room temperature and high temperature, a small expansion coefficient, as well as good thermal conductivity, and can be used as heat exchanger materials for structures that require high temperatures.

Utilizing the resistance to corrosion of aluminum, iron along with other alloys and metals The aluminum nitride nitride ceramics could be used as crucibles as well as casting molds to smelt Al, Cu, Ag Pb, Pb, and many other metals.
