What is Magnesium Nitride

What is Magnesium Nitride?

Magnesium Nitride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg3N2. It belongs to the quantum system of cubic crystals. At ambient temperature, magnesium nutride is a color of yellow and green and magnesium nitride which contains some magnesium oxide particles is grayish white.

The magnesium nitride's molar mass is 100.95g/mol. In terms of density, it is 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium nitride dissolves completely in water and acid however, it is partially dissolvable in alcohol and ethanol.

The melting point of magnesium nitride can be found at 1500 degrees. Magnesium Nitride, just like many metal nitrides water to make ammonia. It is commonly used as a catalyst. They react with acid or nonmetallic oxides that result in ammonium salts and magnesium salts.

Magnesium nitride is ceramic in nature. Magnesium nitride is highly resistant to corrosion resistance and dramatically improves the efficiency of production. Magnesium Nitride also has high thermal conductivity, as well being resistant to corrosion and resistance to temperature. Magnesium is also of great significance due to its use as a catalyst for synthesis of boron nitrogen.

What Do You Use Magnesium Nitride For?

1. Used as a catalyst when prepare the nitride of other elements that have high hardness with high thermal conductivity wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and extremely high resistance to temperature. The first successful synthesizing of cubic boron this catalyst is magnesium Nitride.

2. Utilized for high-strength steel alloys for smelting. Magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) is a substitute for desulphurized magnesium used in construction steel melts, which is helpful for increasing the density, strength that, tension and bearing capacity of steel. In addition, the process of magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) desulfurizationmay reduce the amount of additives, helping to reduce the production costs of construction steel;

3. The use of ceramic is to prepare specific materials;

4. For the manufacturing of a specific alloy foaming agent

5. For the production of special glass

6. To crosslink catalytically-linked polymers.

7. To reuse radioactive waste

How to Make Magnesium Nitride?

At present, the main methods for making magnesium nitride are direct reactions method of magnesium powder with nitrogen, the method for resolving magnesium with nitrogen in nitrogen plasma flow the method of magnesium coil explosion in nitrogen atmosphere the low pressure chemical gas supplementing method for product, self-propagating high temperature synthesis method, nano magnesium nitride synthesis technique, etc.

Recently, G. Soto et al. have prepared amorphous magnesium nutride films that have different Mg:N ratios Si substrates in a nitrogen-based molecular environment by Pulse laser deposition. These methods hinder the production of industrial magnesium nitride due to their high costs, the lengthy process complex operation of equipment or low yields of magnesium oxide.

Although the direct reaction between magnesium powder with nitrogen holds industrial value, the production of magnesium nitride requires higher temperatures for reaction and a longer response time. In addition, the particle's shape is not perfect and easy to disperse, which can not meet the needs of industrial grade. In the process of decomposition, NH3 can form Nbreaking bonds more easily than N2, and decomposed H2 may block the formation of MgO, so ammonia gas can be used as a nitrogen source. Chen Faqin et al. used ammonia liquid as a nitrogen source to prepare magnesium nitride powder through direct nutriding of magnesium. The following conclusions could be drawn: Using thermodynamic analysis, liquid ammonia can react with magnesium powder more easily than nitrogen, resulting in magnesium nitride. The best quality magnesium nitride containing high purity and uniform powder particles can be made at 600, and then ammonia for 1 hour, and then heated to 800, ammonia flow rate of about 500ml/min and an nitriding duration of 1h.
